The John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

The federal Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Program was established in 1979 to provide a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in marine/ocean/Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources.

The program, which is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program, matches highly qualified graduate students with hosts in the legislative branch, the executive branch, or appropriate associations/institutions located in the Washington, D.C. area for a one-year paid fellowship. The program is named after former NOAA administrator John A. Knauss.

Dates: Deadlines vary from program to program, but applications from prospective fellows to Sea Grant Colleges are generally due early to mid-March. Contact your state Sea Grant program (see IV.A. for program contact information) for specific deadlines. The deadline for application to California Sea Grant is 5 pm Pacific Standard Time, February 20, 2009. (updated deadline) Selected applications from the sponsoring Sea Grant program are to be received in the NSGO either through Grants.gov or hardcopy no later than 5 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on April 3, 2009. For applications submitted through Grants.gov APPLY, a date and time receipt indication is included and will be the basis of determining timeliness. Facsimile transmissions and electronic mail submission of applications will not be accepted. Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed.

Funding Opportunity Description: This notice announces that applications may be submitted for the Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship (Knauss Fellowship). The Knauss Fellowship is a program initiated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Sea Grant Office (NSGO), in fulfilling its broad educational responsibilities and legislative mandate of the Sea Grant Act, to provide educational experience in the policies and processes of the Legislative and Executive Branches of the Federal Government to graduate students in marine and aquatic-related fields. The Knauss Fellowship meets NOAA's Mission goal of Protect, Restore and Manage the Use Coastal and Ocean Resources through Ecosystem-Based Management.

Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m., February 20, 2009, to the California Sea Grant Program. (updated deadline) State Sea Grant programs may select and forward to the National Office up to six (6) finalists according to a selection criteria comparable to that used by the National Office in the national competition.

Time Table

  1. February 20, 2009 (updated deadline)- Application materials from each student are due to California Sea Grant (each program sets its own date around this general time).
  2. March, 2009 - Interviews by California Sea Grant staff to select up to six finalists.
  3. April 3, 2009 - Application materials from Sea Grant programs are due at the National Sea Grant Office by 2:00 pm PDT (5:00 pm EDT).
  4. May 23, 2009 - Sea Grant Programs notified of selection results.
  5. December XX-XX, 2009 - Placement Week (exact dates TBD); selected applicants are required to travel to Washington, D.C., for interviews with potential hosts.
  6. February 1, 2010 - Start of the fellowship.
